Questionnaire

For part of our audience research we created a questionnaire and asked ten people, of various age groups, to answer our questions. The questionnaire included eight, in total, fairly simple questions. Six questions before we showed them the live music video, and two after showing them. The video we showed them is the one that is posted in the last blog entry.

Here is a copy of the Questionnaire,

If you cannot see the questions on the pictures above, the questions we asked were as follows:-

1) Are you familiar with the song 'ABC by Jackson 5'? (If not, show song)

2) If so, how would you describe the genre?

3) What would you say the themes in this song were?

4) What would you associate with the song? eg. themes, colours etc

5) How does this song make you feel?

6) What is your interpretation of what this song is about?

(Show music video)

7) Did you think the music video went well with the song?

8) What would you add and incorporate into the video if you had the chance?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After getting the questionnaire filled in we analysed the answers and this is what we found.

1) 8 out of the people knew the song through and through. One person said they were 'aware' of the song and one said that they only know the chorus to the song.

2) The majority of people stated that they thought the genre of music was 'poppy' music. One person said that it was 'Motown'. Although pop music seems to be the main thing people thought of when we asked them what genre it was some said things like Jazzy, Classic and Dancey.

3) 5 out of the 10 people that we asked stated that they thought that the themes in the song were about love. However 4 out of the 10 stated that they thought the song was all about learning and one said they thought it was about enjoying life.

4) When asked what they assosiated with the song, 4 people said that they assosiated it with colours in some way. 3 people said they assosiated the song with children. 2 said that they assosiated the song with building blocks saying A, B and C on them and 1 person said that they assosiated the song with happiness and being carefree.

5) When asked how the song made them feel, 3 out of the 10 people said that it made them want to dance. 3 people said that the song made them happy, 1 said that it made them feel joyous, 1 said lively and another said it made them feel energeric. Only one person out of the 10 that we asked said that the song made them feel average.

6) These questions are fairly open questions so we decided to write all ten people's answers to this question because we had a range of answers.

  • Growing up, having an easy social life
  • Childhood
  • Relationships, Meant to Rhyme
  • Not Sure
  • Fresh person who is learning about and using metaphors to capture the meaning
  • Moving up in life
  • A song to cheer people up and make people smile
  • How easy life is
  • Happiness, Love and Fun
  • Falling in love for the first time / young love

(After showing them the pre-existing video)

7) When asked if they thought the music video went well with the song, the majority of the people we asked thought it did. 8 out of the 10 people thought the song generally fit well with the music however they beleived that there could be things put into it to make it better. 1 person thought that the video and the music did not go together at all and 1 person thought that the video could have been more interesting.

8) Again, with this question it is a bit of an open ended question so we decided to write down all of the answers we were given

  • Less things distractin your attention from the videos - should be about the Jackson 5 storyline as well as the performance element
  • 60's theme, colourful outfits
  • Sesame Street Theme and/or Barney the Dinosaur
  • Lots of different raced children dancing and being happy
  • More people dancing, and more characters, such as "the girl" dancing
  • Building Blocks, Children and Giants
  • Rabbits, they are cute and happy
  • More scenes
  • Storyline
  • Animation, School Theme
